Flores island is one of the Lesser Sunda islands located in the eastern part of Sumbawa and Komodo National Park with an approximately area of 14,300km2. This island is the largest island on the east nusa tenggara region.

Flores island is a home of the unique culture, nature beauties and more.. It lies between Sumbawa and Timor islands is an abbreviation of Cabo da Flores which was used by Portuguese sailor in the 17th century to identify the cape on the eastern end of the islands because of its underwater gardens. Divided by mountain chains and volcanoes, the island populated by ethnic groups with their own traditions and languages.

Predominantly Catholic, the have retained several aspects of the Portuguise culture such as the Easter parade held annually at Larantuka on the eastern part of the island and the Royal Regalia of the former King of Sikka.

Mt. Kelimutu, 1.690m fifty years ago, had three lakes, one lake was blue green, one fiery green and one red. Thirty years later, the colors had changed to blue, red brown and cafe au lait. Now, Ata Bupu (Lake) is a dramatic dark-brown. Ata Polo are dark red-brown, and only Nuwa Muri remains aquamarine or turquoise as it apparently always was. No one can explain the cause of such color changes except to suppose that different minerals are dissolved in the waters of each lake.

The countryside surrounding the lake, though no longer so “natural” as in the days of early Dutch visitors – some hundred years ago – is still mountainous and dramatic enough with panoramic views all side

In September 2003, the international paleoanthropologists discovered a small skeletons, that they described as a previously unknown hominid species Homo Floresiensis. These are informally named hobbits and appear to have stood about 90cm tall. The most complete individual is dated as 18000 years old.

Flores was also a habitat of the extinct Stegodon dwarf elephant until approximately 18,000 years ago. It also was the habitat of species of giant rodents. It is speculated by scientists that limited resources drove the few species that lived upon the island to gigantism and dwarfism

There are many languages spoken on the island of Flores, all of them belonging to the Austronesian family. In the centre of the island in the districts of Ngada, Nagekeo, and Ende there is what is variously called the Central Flores Dialect Chain or the Central Flores Linkage. Within this area there are slight linguistic differences in almost every village. At least six separate languages are identifiable. These are from west to east: Ngadha, Nage, Keo, Ende, Lio and Palu’e, which is spoken on the island with the same name of the north coast of Flores. Locals would probably also add So’a and Bajawa to this list, which anthropologists have labeled dialects of Ngadha.

Portuguese traders and missionaries came to Flores in the 16th century, mainly to Larantuka and Sikka. Their influence is still discernible in Sikka’s language and culture. In fact, the island’s name, Flores, means “flowers” in Portuguese.

Flores is almost entirely Catholic and represents one of the “religious borders” created by the Catholic expansion in the Pacific and the spread of Islam from the west across Indonesia. In other places in Indonesia, such as in the Malukus and Sulawesi, the divide is more rigid and has been the source of bloody sectarian clashes.

The most famous tourist attraction in Flores is Kelimutu; three coloured lakes in the district of Ende and close to the town of Moni. These crater lakes are in the caldera of a volcano, and fed by a volcanic gas source, resulting in highly acid water. The coloured lakes change colours on an irregular basis, depending on the oxidation state of the lake (see Pasternack, Keli Mutu Volcanic Lakes), from bright red through green and blue. The latest colours (late 2004) were said to be turquoise, brown and black.

There is good snorkelling and diving on several locations along the north coast of Flores, most notably Maumere and Riung. However, due to the destructive practice of local fishermen using bombs to fish, and locals selling shells to tourists, combined with the after effects of a devastating tsunami in 1992, the reefs have slowly been destroyed.

Labuanbajo (on the western tip of Flores) is a town often used by tourists, from where they can visit Komodo and Rinca. Labuanbajo also attracts scuba divers, as whale sharks inhabit the waters around Labuanbajo.

Tourists can visit Luba and Bena villages to see traditional houses in Flores. Larantuka, on the isle’s eastern end, is known for its Holy Week festivals.

In addition to tourism, the main economic activities on Flores are agriculture, fishing and seaweed production. The primary food crops being grown on Flores are rice, maize sweet potato and cassava, while the main cash crops are coffee, coconut, candle nut and cashew. Flores is one of the newest origins for Indonesian coffee. Previously, most Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) from Flores was blended with other origins. Now, demand is growing for this coffee because of its heavy body and sweet chocolate, floral and woody notes

The Regency of Banyuwangi is located at the easternmost end of the Indonesian island of Java and it is a very strategic area for those who want to go to Bali, since it also serves as an important ferry port between Java and Bali. It is surrounded by mountains and forests to the west; by sea to the east and south. Banyuwangi is only separated by Strait of Bali from Bali. The regency had a population of 1,488,791 at the Census held on 30 June 2000; by 2005 it was estimated to have risen to 1,514,605. The city of Banyuwangi is the administrative capital. The name Banyuwangi is Javanese for “fragrance water”, connected to the Javanese folklore of Sri Tanjung.
Administrative areas

The Regency of Banyuwangi consists of 24 subdistricts (Kecamatan):

Banyuwangi Kota

Society and history

Banyuwangi is — as are other Indonesian areas — a heterogeneous area where many ethnic groups are mingled and live together under the same roof. One of the native groups is the Osing community which has a distinctly Hindu culture although they can be considered as a Javanese sub-ethnic group. They live mainly in the central part of Banyuwangi and they sometimes consider themselves as Majapahit descendants. Other groups are Javanese (living mostly in the south and west), Madurese (mainly in the north and coastal area) and Balinese (scattered but more concentrated in the east). Other smaller groups are Chinese, Buginese, Arabs, etc.

This heterogeneity reflects history of this region. Once known as Blambangan (or its variation: Balambangan and Balumbungan), it was a vassal of the Majapahit Kingdom and a regional trade center. After the Majapahit Kingdom ceased to exist, it became an independent kingdom and, as such, the last Hindu kingdom of Java. In order to defend itself from the troops of the Sultanate of Demak, which tried to occupy it, Blambangan asked for help from Balinese kings, which caused it to lose its independence to Balinese kingdoms. During this time Blambangan was deeply influenced by Balinese culture. After around 150 years of Balinese occupation, the Sultanate of Mataram gained control of the territory and renamed it Banyuwangi. Later, it was part of the Mataram territory controlled by the VOC (1770). During the expansion of plantations in 19th century, many parts of Banyuwangi were planted with coffee and sugarcane, which feature its landscape even now. The Chinese and Arabs came mostly during this period.

Banyuwangi people are known for their deep Islamic belief but combined with pre-Islamic practices.

Culture

Because of its location along Java–Bali road, Banyuwangi is rich in culture, where Javanese, Madurese, Balinese and other cultures had met. This area has got unique arts, traditions and natures. In addition, Banyuwangi has its own trademark arts.
Gandrung Dance

This is a Banyuwangi-typical dance which performed by a woman and along with simple music like violin, triangle (called kluncing), gong (or kempul), kendhang and sometimes with keyboard as result of modern influence. It is performed during night until dawn particularly in parties.
Janger or Damarwulan

This is a traditional theatre art which has been developed since the 19th century in Banyuwangi. This theatre is a combination between Balinese, Javanese and local cultures. Balinese influences can be seen in its performers’ costumes (which remind one of Arja costumes) and instruments, meanwhile Javanese influences is in its “lakon” or stories as well as language in dialogues. It is distinct from the Balinese Janger.

Tourism

Many European tourists visiting Bali come to Banyuwangi to surf in Plengkung and dive in Tabuhan Island. Plekung Beach is also known as G-land or green land have 3 types of waves which the greatest has 6 to 8 meters tall.[1] Merpati Nusantara Airlines operate a daily flight to Banyuwangi from Surabaya using their 56 seat MA60 turboprops. Since May 2011, Sky Aviation (Indonesia) has regularly flight with 9 passengers Grand Caravan from Denpasar-Banyuwangi vice versa and Banyuwangi-Surabaya vice versa uses new Blimbingsari Airport which has inaugurated on December 29, 2010.

( Pulau Tabuhan )

Pulau Tabuhan terletak 20 km dar kota Banyuwangi, tepatnya berada di desa Bangsring,Kecamatan Wongsorejo. Luas Pulau Tabuhan kira-kira 5 hektar. Pemandangan kebun lautnya sangat mengagumkan. Batu Karang adalah rumah dari ribuan ikan kerang, bunga karang, udang karang, dan tumbuhan laut. Pulau Tabuhan sangat cocok untuk scuba diving, karena airnya yang sanagt jernih.

It is situated 20 km Banyuwangi city it is at the village of Bangsring, Wongsorejo Tabuhan island covers an area of about 5 Ha. There are spectacular marine gardens. the coral reef are homes for myriad of shellfish, sponges, crayfish and marine plants. It is good for scuba diving as the water is very clear.

Seblang Bakungan constitutes a village purification celebration. It is done a week after Idhul Adha. The purpose of this activity is to ward off misfortune by organizing a Seblang show in the night. After dusk, it is opened by a parade around the village by bringing torches (ider bumi). Every household makes tumpeng(rice cones)and “pecel pitik”(grilled chicken). After “ider bumi” procession, “tumpengs” are put in the main place of Seblang Performance. After the amin fiqin visitors, followed by all community in the village. Seblang Bakungan is performed by an old woman in front of “sanggar” -a kind of small stage. After being spelled the seblang dancer dances in a trance condition. There are 12 songs in the performance. They tells about the life, hospitalty, environment, etc. The activities are over in the midlle of the night after “Adol Kembang”(a dancer pretends selling flowers). The spectators, then, snatch the various seed plants, and the highest windmill away. The people believe that thouse stuff can against evil spirit, and they put the at home, on the door.

FOR A UNIQUE GOLF EXPERIENCE, GO GOLFING IN THE CRATER OF AN EXTINCT VOLCANO AT AN ALTITUDE OF 1,142 METERS ABOVE SEA LEVEL!

The Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club was considered in the 1980’s – “One of the 50 Greatest Golf Courses in the World” – by Golf Magazine and up until today, golfers from all corners of the world travel to Bali in order to play golf at one of Asia’s most iconic and “classic” golf courses. Bali Handara Kosaido Country Club is located in the central highlands of Bali and is nestled down inside the crater of an extinct volcano at an altitude of 1,142 meters above sea level. The resort is surrounded by lush green mountains, crater lakes and an equatorial rain forest, which creates dramatic backdrops for tee shots and approach shots into the well maintained bentgrass greens. Another unique characteristic of this world-renowned golf resort is the year round coolness of the fresh mountain air (14-24 C); which will certainly make for a pleasantly comfortable round of golf at this 18-hole championship golf course designed by five times Open Champion Peter Thomson along with Michael Wolveridge and Ronald Fream.

Welcome to Banyuwangi, East Java Indonesia .The Sunrise of Java…..

Start planning your vacation around Banyuwangi to enjoy beautiful and spectacular places such as ijen crater, g-land, Sukamade beach, and many more and enjoy too some exciting cultural tourism. That’s Banyuwangi. The Beauty Banyuwangi.

Banyuwangi is the eastern-most regency of East Java. To the north lies the regency of Situbondo. The regencies of Jember and Bondowoso neighbor Banyuwangi to the west. To the east lies the island of Bali and to the west lies the Indonesian Ocean. Banyuwangi is situated on the coordinate 70 45’ 15” S and 113’ 38.2” E. Because of its location, Banyuwangi has diverse natural scenery, rich art, culture, customs and traditions.

The beauty of nature is spread across Banyuwangi from the west to the east. Mountains, forests and beaches mark the landscape of the regency. For instance, Ijen Crater, in the western part of Banyuwangi is famous for its beautiful crater lake, the traditional sulfur miners who amazingly climb up and down the slope of Mount Merapi, and the plantations that cover the Crater’s slope. The National Park of Meru Betiri is famous for its Java Tiger and turtles. These locations form the center of the Tourism Developed area which is called the Diamond Triangle, which connects one Tourism Object to another.

Banyuwangi also has various art, culture, customs and traditions. One of the typical arts of Banyuwangi is Gandrung, a welcoming dance for distinguished guests. The dance is the defining dance of Banyuwangi. Besides Gandrung, Seblang, Kuntulan, Damarwulan, Angklung, Ketoprak, Barong, Kendang Kempul, Jaranan are arts that can be seen in Banyuwangi. Other customs that can be observed in Banyuwangi include the sea offering, metik (a celebration performed before rice and coffee harvesting), Rebo Wekasan, Kebo Visit Banyuwangi the Real Tropical Country keboan, Ruwatan, Tumplek punjen, Gredoan, Endog-endogan, etc. These events are performed every year and are included in the Calendar of Events of Banyuwangi. The typical handicrafts and traditional foods are available across Banyuwangi. The products and places that should be visited are Batik Tulis at Temenggungan and Tempo, Bamboo handicraft at Kecamatan Rogojampi and Kalipuro, etc. Banyuwangi also has typical food products; such as bagiak, selai pisang (banana jam) etc.

There native people of Banyuwangi are Banyuwanginese. They have their own dialect which combines the languages of Javanese and Balinese. Ethnic Javanese, Madurese, Balinese and people from Banjar also call Banyuwangi home. The diverse natural scenery, the rich art, culture, customs and traditions, constitute worthy treasures that must be introduced to all people. The people of Banyuwangi and the local government will be supported and benefited by tourism. The income from tourism will provide the capital to develop the regency of Banyuwangi. Tourists will also benefit from their rich experiences as they visit Banyuwangi.

Understand

Banyuwangi is at the easternmost tip of Java, and is best known for its ferry connection at Ketapang to Gilimanuk in Bali. This area has a lot more to offer though and it is becoming better known as a visitor destination in its own right. Banyuwangi is also the gateway to some stunning volcanic scenery on the Ijen Plateau as well as the main access point for the Baluran National Park, world renowned surfing at G-Land (Grajagan), and the remote Alas Purwo National Park.

Tourist information

How to get Banyuwangi

By train
Banyuwangi Train station, ☎ +62 333 510396 is close to Ketapang ferry port, about 300 m to the northwest.

By bus
The main bus terminal is Sri Tanjung, ☎ +62 333 510635 , 2 km south of Ketapang port. Surabaya is 285 km away by road, and buses take about 6 hours.

By ferry
Ferries run from Gilimanuk in Bali to Ketapang every 30 min, operated 24 hours a day. The journey takes about 45 minutes, although loading and unloading can take much longer. Price Rp 7,000 for foot passengers. The ferry operator is ASDP,
☎ +62 333 413730 .

Get around

The main bus station in Banyuwangi is at Ketapang ferry terminal. From there, regular yellow coloured bemos and shuttle buses run into the city (Sri Tanjung bus terminal/Brawijaya bus terminal), and elsewhere in the vicinity. Becaks (horse-cart/pedicabs) are widely available in town.

Most surfers heading for G-Land are doing so from Bali, and transportation to the camps is part of their surf package. You can however reach G-Land independently with a bus from Sri Tanjung terminal to Benculuk (about 1 hour), where you change and catch another bus to Grajagan (about 30 minutes).

You can hire private jeeps with a driver in Banyuwangi. Vital for independent trips up to the Ijen Crater or for exploring the remote parts of the south eastern coastal National parks.

This is one of the more remote and least populated parks areas of Java, and one which is relatively under-visited due to both the difficulties of getting there and the lack of developed accommodation options. It is also an area of great mystical significance to the Javanese – local legend has it that this was the first area of the whole world to emerge from the ocean.

The park is largely flat with highest peak only 320 m and covers some 43,000 hectares. There are some beautiful, deserted beaches here as well as large swatches of lowland tropical forest. The world famous G-land surf camp is on the park borders.

The key access point to the park is the village of Triangulasi which is about 80 km south east of Banyuwangi. Before visiting you should make contact with the national park office in Banyuwangi at Alas Purwo National Park Head Office, Jl A Yani 108, ☎ +62 333 428675 .There is some very basic self-catering hut accommodation at Triangulasi, as well as a camping ground and the park office will be able to advise you on this.

Mammals to be seen inside the park include banteng (the buffalo of Java), asiatic wild dog, leopard cat, muntjac deer and ebony leaf monkey. The park’s western beaches are noted turtle hatching areas with olive ridley, hawksbill, green and leatherback turtles all occurring.
The Ijen Crater in East Java

The Ijen Plateau

Near Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, this is a spectacular area of volcanic activity. The Ijen Plateau is the centrepoint of the large mountain range west of Banyuwangi, and which abutts the Baluran National Park to the north.

The Ijen Crater (Kawah Ijen) can be approached from Bondowoso in the west or Banyuwangi in the east. The Bondowoso route is recommended as the road is relatively better (although that is not saying much) and the 90 minute foot climb much easier. From Bondowoso you are best off finding a guide with a car (preferably a 4×4) who will drive you through the village of Wonosari and eastwards up a very basic potholled road which winds its way up the mountain. You will pass through native casuarina forest and extensive coffee plantations before the road ends at the village of Jampit where there is some shelter available (Pos Paltuding). If you are travelling late in the day, you could actually bed down with a sleeping bag or camp here as you could in the disused vulcanology station huts slightly further up the mountain. The crater lake is a 90 minute hike further on from here. When you arrive the colour of the water in the lake is scarcely believable being an extraordinary vivid aqua blue. Evidence of volcanic activity is everywhere with steaming water and brilliant yellow crystaline sulphur deposits. Collecting the latter is an industry here and one with extremely harsh working conditions. You will see many workers trudging up and down the mountain carrying sacks of sulphur.

To the crater there are two roads: one from Banyuwangi and the other from Bondowoso. Both come together at the parking, from where you can go up to the crater. Neither road is good, but the Bondowoso route is easier.

Many other post-caldera cones and craters are located within the caldera or along its rim. The largest concentration of post-caldera cones forms an E-W-trending zone across the southern side of the caldera. Coffee plantations cover much of the Ijen caldera floor, and tourists are drawn to its waterfalls, hot springs, and dramatic volcanic scenery. The Ijen Crater is certainly one of the great natural wonders of Indonesia.

Gandrung Dance. This is a highly regarded art-form in Banyuwangi and one of the nicknames for the city is actually Gandrung. In Javanese Gandrung means hopelessly in love. The love in this case is directed to Dewi Sri, the goddess of rice. The performance is a homage to Dewi Sri in gratitude for the rice harvest. The performance is a very special cultural event with unique orchestration. Check at the Tourist Information Centre for scheduled performances.

Do
Surf at G-Land (Grajagan Beach) about 60 km south of Banyuwangi. One of the world’s most consistent left-hand reefbreaks, Grajagan was first surfed in 1972. A few years later he Australian Boyum bothers built a rickety bamboo treehouse on the beach bordering the remote Alas Purwo National Park on Java’s south-east tip and the G-Land surf camp concept was born. These days there are several basic surfcamps between the wild jungle and kilometre-long coral reef. Permission to stay at G-Land must be obtained from the park rangers in advance, which is handled by the surf camp management. The camps offer all inclusive surf packages from 3 days and upwards, details on the following websites:

G-Land Bobby’s Surf Camp,Run by a Balinese surfer who took over the original surf camp operation from the Boyum brothers.

G-Land Surf Camp .Also have an office at Okie House, Poppies II, in Kuta, Bali.

Joyo’s G-Land Surf Camp. Also have an office in Bali at Gang Benesari 77, Poppies II, Kuta, Bali.

See a magician. From all over the archipelago Indonesians flock to consult Banyuwangi’s famous and infamous practitioners of white magic and the darker arts, the dutak.

Gallery & Museum Mozes Misdy, Jl Gatot Subroto 119, Ketapang, ☎ +62 333 423573 . Mozes Midzy is a renowned Javanese modern artist and he was born in Banyuwangi in 1941. This gallery showcases his work and pieces are available for purchase.

Eat
Street stall and simple warung food is the go in Banyuwangi and you will find lots of it. Easy to find in the middle of town.
