Who We Are…

The Umalas Equestrian Resort opened in 1995 and was the first riding stables of its kind and standards on the stunning island of Bali, in the Indonesian archipelago.

Sabine Kaufmann, the founder and owner, who has loved horses all her life, was delighted to make her dream come true when, with six horses from Jogya, central Java, she started The Umalas Equestrian Resort. It soon became apparent that many shared the fantasy of riding horses along endless wide sand beaches at sunset, or through the famous Balinese paddy fields.

With the support of friends, staff and the local community, Sabine has today successfully established Bali’s premier Equestrian Resort, with a staff of almost forty, just over thirty horses – some of which are stabled by private owners – 5 guest rooms with en-suite bathrooms, a world-class restaurant and swimming pool, as well as 4 paddocks, all on 1.6 hectares of spectacular land.

Welcome to Umalas Equestrian Resort
Situated near the beach in the lush green rice fields of Umalas. Our Stables provide the most comprehensive riding facility on the island. We offer rice field tours, beach tours, as well as lessons for every level of rider. Ask about our programs especially suited to beginners and children.

For those who want the complete Bali riding experience why not stay with us in our boutique hotel-style accommodation in a tropical setting, complete with swimming pool and children’s playground.

At The Umalas Equestrian Resort you will not find large groups on head to tail tours. Even though we have 32 horses each rider has their own guide. More experienced riders can also enjoy the thrill of cantering along the beach.

Tours & Lessons Offered at Umalas Equestrian Resort

The Umalas Equestrian Resort offers daily tours & lessons. Below you will find a summary of these activities. The lessons are held between 8:00 – 11:00am & 3:00 – 5:30 pm and the beach tours start at 8:00am and either 3:00pm (3 hour Beach Tour) or 3:30 pm daily (2 hour Beach Tour)

30-minute Rice Field Tour
This tour is thoroughly recommended for beginners and children. The horses are walked by a hand held guide through a picturesque Balinese village, alongside rice paddies and a charming lane.

2-hour Beach Tour
Open to all ranges of adult riders & children from 8 years onwards, the tour starts from the stables, passes through a Balinese village, down across a river, and out onto a small stretch of road that leads directly to fabulous Batu Belig beach, which riders and horses will enjoy for around an hour. This tour is concluded on the same route back.
All beginners and children will have their own personal guide at no extra cost.
Experienced riders will have the chance to canter along the sandy shores.

3-hour Beach Tour
Open to all ranges of adult riders & children from 8 years onwards, the tour starts from the stables, passes through a Balinese village, down across a river, and out onto a small stretch of road that leads directly to fabulous Batu Belig Beach, which riders will turn onto in the direction of Canggu. They will follow this stunning beach up along the coast until Berawa Beach for an hour then turn into the rice fields and ride for 30 minutes alongside the paddies, stopping at a beachside hotel for refreshments. To then return along the beach. This tour is concluded on the same route back.

Pony Ride
For our youngest guests who want to experience riding our guides will take the children around our property on the back of one of our ponies.

The Umalas Equestrian Resort encourages and welcomes outside guests, of all ages, to join all the aforementioned activities, but suggests reserving ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
Please be advised that the maximum weight limit for the comfort of our horses is 85 kg.

EXCLUSIVE LESSONS
Please find below a brief description of our various lessons. All lessons are held at The Umalas Equestrian Resort in either the indoor or outdoor arenas.

Beginner Lunge Lessons
This private lesson is offered to instill confidence in beginners and is conducted in the riding hall or outdoor arena, with the rider led by an instructor who has the horse on a lunge (long rope). The rider does not steer the horse, but learns to move with the horse through different paces – walk, trot and canter.

Dressage Lessons
Are appropriate for intermediate and experienced riders. Intermediate riders refine their skills of steering the horses while experienced riders will fulfill dressage skills.

Show Jumping
Due to the respect of the horses, these lessons are strictly for experienced riders. Riders will be instructed on how to gauge distance as well as keep horses in line to further their jumping seat.

Our Facilities
The Umalas Equestrian Resort is located in the south west part of Bali, just outside fashionable Seminyak, in Umalas, a charming Balinese village of paddy fields and calm.
25 minutes to the international airport, and
25 minutes on horseback to tranquil Batu Belig beach.

The resort is situated on 1,6 hectares, combining tropical gardens and elegant accommodation with International Standard Horse facilities.

Accommodation is warm and welcoming decorated with selected art pieces and traditional fabrics, utilizing elegant coconut wood furniture. All rooms offer rice field and sunset views. A private balcony terrace invites the guests to relax with views onto the surrounding Balinese gardens. Bali Island Horse, Yeh Gangga Beach Bali

Our Stables are located on the coast, at the Seaside village of Yeh Gangga, just west of most photographed and one of Bali’s most sacred places, Tanah Lot. The scenery is beautiful in this peaceful village, where rice farming, fishing and sea salt harvesting are the main activities.
Gently sloping rice terraces fringe a sparkling black mineral shore, trail riding west, we pause at a waterfall *, sea-salt harvesting area, a temple set on the cliffs, a bat cave and a natural rock headland which juts out of the crystal Blue Ocean, but best of all, an opportunity to swim with the horses *.
An idyllic setting, invigorating sea air, crystal clear ocean, spectacular coastline, rural panorama and the local people, completes our trip of natural beauty and Balinese hospitality.
